Jesus points out once again that there is no difference between external obedience and inward desire. The righteousness that God requires is both inward as well as outward. When we lust after a woman, or covet our neighbors wife inwardly it is the same as adultery in the eyes of God. This is another way that Jesus shows us that even the most righteous among mankind are still guilty before God.

The scribes and pharisees built their interpretations from the letter of the law. They looked at what the scripture said and then made rules to enforce it so that no one broke what the letter spelled out. The pharisees prided themselves on being able to keep the letter of the law and demanded others to do the same. In this way they thought they would be commended by God for their outstanding righteousness. However, Jesus came to show them how they missed the spirit of the law of God

Now that Jesus had set the beatitudes of His new kingdom He wanted the people to understand that He wasn’t merely doing away with the Law and Prophets. Rather, He was the fulfillment of what was longed for in their pages. Notice the passion that Jesus has for the written word of God. I believe the Bible is inspired and infallible because thats they way that Jesus speaks of it. Jesus knew that everything God spoke was coming to pass and nothing could stop the will of the Father.

The beatitudes provide us with a portrait of a Christian and encapsulate what it means to call ourselves a disciple. These “blessed” statements by Christ reveal to us where our true, eternal happiness is found. It’s found in our understanding of who we are and who God is. Jesus is the better Moses. Jesus is the better David. When our understanding of who we are in relation to God is in its rightful place, as the first four beatitudes show us, then and only then can we properly relate to those around us. In the next half of the beatitudes, Jesus then shows us how we are to relate to others, which is solely rooted upon the first four beatitudes how we relate to God.

The writer of Hebrews leaves us no doubt that Jesus is the greater Moses (3:1-6). However, as Matthew writes to his Jewish brethren, he shows all the similarities that Jesus shared with Moses. We have already seen that God divinely caused Jesus to escape the murder of the Hebrew boys (Matthew 2:13-18). We have been told that Jesus would deliver His people from sin (Matthew 1:21). This we we continue with part II of A New Moses.

Simon and Andrew have no idea what was about to happen to them,... in this text where we are first introduced to them, they are merely fisherman going about their routine duties of mending nets and catching fish. How glorious is the change that Jesus can bring to a human life! And change is His purpose. Jesus tells Simon and Andrew that He is going to make them something that they currently are not. At the moment they fish for fish. Jesus is going to make them fishers of men.

Matthew shows us that Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.  It shouldn’t surprise us that God’s will includes wilderness experiences.  Many people teach that if you’re really following God in faith then you wont have difficult encounters.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.  God’s will can be dangerous.  Like Israel being freed from Egypt to wander in the desert, now we find Jesus in similar fashion.  The Spirit leads and Satan tries to deceive.  Where Israel failed… Jesus will succeed!
